Well, that really depends on your OS and what software you have to
manage the optical drive.
For example, I'm running ASE 12.5.2 on XP. I'm also running Roxio's
Drag-To-Disc component (ie, this allows for direct read/write access to
the CD/DVD).
I can actually issue a 'dump database' command and have the dump file go
directly to my optical disk ... no problema. 'load database' from the
optimical disk also works.
Now, is this same capability available on other OS's? *shrug*
I'm also not sure what would happen in terms of sp_volchange commands
should a dump span optical disks. Again, easy enough to test. (Perhaps
as easy as defining 'capacity' appropriately?)

You will have to dump to a file and then copy that to the dvd drive.
Don't forget to use the compression option (v12+)
