backup server hangs instead of begin create dump

Hello,

We have ASE 12.5.3 at Windows 2000 Server.

Sometimes at almost any server, trying to start DUMP DATABASE procedure
(compressed or no) backup process hangs (approximately 1 time per month,
backup we make 3 or for times per day on every server) and do nothing.
Backup log is empty - says nothing but "start backup procedure". I need to
restart "Sybase_BCKServer" service and then backup starts ok. I have no idea
how to avoid this hangs. Help please.

I’ve had the same problem with ASE (12.0 and 12.5) on SUN
Solaris multi processor machines. The backups will run fine
for a few days then suddenly the dump just hangs with no
message in the log file and the only way on 12.0 was to
recycle the ASE server. On 12.5 I only had to recycle the
backup server.
I start my backups from crontab (the unix scheduler)
It used to start backups for database 1,2 and 3 at e.g.
19:00
It will complete at around 19:35 and the next 3 was started
at e.g. 19:45 etc.
The concurrent start time seem to be the problem
After changing the start times to 19:00,19:01 and 19:02 for
the first 3 concurrent backups and 19:45.19:46,19:47 for the
next, etc. the problem disappeared.

Try changing the timeout setting
sp_serveroption ' SYB_BACKUP','timeouts',false
