"Failed to open any network listeners" usually means that some other
process already has the backup server's port in use (sometimes
that means the backupserver is already up and running).

The "unrecognized rpc received" messages could be an indication
of some other process sending stuff to the port you picked.

Use the $SYBASE/ASE-*/install/showserver command to
see if the backupservere is already up and running. If not,
try changing the port number in the interfaces file using the
dsedit utility and boot backupserver again.

I'm receiving the same error, after making the changes you suggested.
The backup server is up and running and responds to a ping from DSEdit.
But I'm still not able to backup or restore any of my databases on ASE
15.0, Enterprise. Is there something I'm missing?

Nevermind. I was able to correct this issue by dropping and recreating
the backup server as followed.

sp_dropserver SYB_BACKUP
go
sp_addserver SYB_BACKUP,NULL,SBNA_BS
go

Where SBN_BS is the name of your backup server specifiec in DSEDIT.
