Hi,

I am facing a problem when I am trying to load a dump
database in to Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise v 15.0.2

I am trying to recover a backup database from the
Interactive SQL. Here are the methods I used.

1. Method 1: Loading Database from Backup

LOAD DATABASE momdb FROM 'E:\mom_backup\cbcdat21.dat'

Here are the error logs:

Sep 23 13:04:35 2008: Backup Server: 2.23.1.1: Connection
from Server TESTSRV1 on Host testsrv1 with HostProcid .
Sep 23 13:04:35 2008: Backup Server: 4.10.2.1: Label
validation error: first label not VOL1.
Sep 23 13:04:35 2008: Backup Server: 6.31.2.4: Volume
rejected.
Sep 23 13:04:35 2008: Backup Server: 1.14.2.2: Unrecoverable
I/O or volume error. This DUMP or LOAD session must exit.
Sep 23 13:04:35 2008: Backup Server: 6.32.2.3:
E:\mom_backup\cbcdat21.dat: volume not valid or not
requested (server: , session id: 67.)
Sep 23 13:04:35 2008: Backup Server: 1.14.2.4: Unrecoverable
I/O or volume error. This DUMP or LOAD session must exit.

2. Method 2: Loading Archive Database

LOAD DATABASE momdb FROM
'compress::E:\mom_backup\cbcdat21.dat'

Here are the error logs:
Sep 23 13:05:26 2008: Backup Server: 2.23.1.1: Connection
from Server TESTSRV1 on Host testsrv1 with HostProcid .
Sep 23 13:05:26 2008: Backup Server: 4.132.1.1: Attempting
to open byte stream device:
'compress::E:\mom_backup\cbcdat21.dat::00'
Sep 23 13:05:26 2008: Backup Server: 4.10.2.1: Label
validation error: first label not VOL1.
Sep 23 13:05:26 2008: Backup Server: 6.31.2.4: Volume
rejected.
Sep 23 13:05:26 2008: Backup Server: 1.14.2.2: Unrecoverable
I/O or volume error. This DUMP or LOAD session must exit.
Sep 23 13:05:26 2008: Backup Server: 6.32.2.3:
compress::E:\mom_backup\cbcdat21.dat::00: volume not valid
or not requested (server: , session id: 69.)
Sep 23 13:05:26 2008: Backup Server: 1.14.2.4: Unrecoverable
I/O or volume error. This DUMP or LOAD session must exit

Do you have any idea about this?

Thanks,

When reporting load database problems, it's always good to give the
dump database command as well as the load database command.
Especially when using compression.

Are you sure that 'E:\mom_backup\cbcdat21.dat' is a database dump
and not a database device ?

Hi,
I think it is a database device.
If so, how can I restore it. Can you explain the steps?
I am very new to Sybase, and struggling with loading the
backup we have received from the client.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I just understood that it is a Database Device.
I tried to restore this from the Sybase Central. Still
problem..

Here are the logs:
Backup Server session id is: 10. Use this value when
executing the 'sp_volchanged' system stored procedure after
fulfilling any volume change request from the Backup Server.
Backup Server: 4.10.2.1: Label validation error: first label
not VOL1.
Backup Server: 6.31.2.4: Volume rejected.
Backup Server: 1.14.2.2: Unrecoverable I/O or volume error.
This DUMP or LOAD session must exit.
Backup Server: 6.32.2.3: E:\mom_backup\cbcdat21.dat: volume
not valid or not requested (server: , session id: 10.)
Backup Server: 1.14.2.4: Unrecoverable I/O or volume error.
This DUMP or LOAD session must exit.
Error encountered by Backup Server. Please refer to Backup
Server messages for details.

There is a major difference between a database device and a database
dump. A dataserver can have many devices and a database can be
spread over multiple devices and should be to separate log from data.

You can't just take one piece of that system and use it into another
server (at least not without extensive knowledge about disaster
recovery scenarios).

What you have is not a backup, so you can't use load database to
restore a backup.

Best is to ask the client to give you a backup + database specification
(i.e. size and segment layout). Look at the manuals to learn about devices
and database creation, esp. the data and log clauses. You then have to
create the database and load the dump.

Also be sure you know if it is an Adaptive Server Enterprise
(ASE) dump or device or an Adaptive Server Anywhere (ASA) dump/device.
Something about the situation makes me suspect this file may
be an ASA database.
