We have ASE 12.5.3 servers running on Solaris 8. Have a reqt
to quickly (under 5 min) dump/load a 40 - 50GB db into
another ASE 12.5.3 server. Have read a bit about
Quiesce/mount/unmount. Is there clear information on how to
use these and facilitate such backup/restore operations.
Also need is info from first-handers about how long this
process takes to copy a 50GB db into another.
Your responses are highly appreciated. Sreekanth.

40-50 Gb in < 5 minutes seems ambitious if the devices copies have to be
physically moved as well.

Anyway, quiesce database itself doesn't do much; it just facilitates that
consistent copies of database devices can be made. The speed with which you
can do this is not really related to ASE, but depends on the disk system
used. Quiesce database can be used with EMC's Timefinder for example: once
the DB is quiesced, you can split the mirror on EMC level and use the device
copies to start a different ASE server. EMC can split the mirror very fast
(don't ask me for numbers). There's a white paper about Quiesce database and
EMC on sybase.com that spells it out:
